the light withdraws into itself
and leaves no trace of what it touched

the years drift through me
like dust through an empty hall
every sound arrives without meaning
voices fade before they’re spoken

sorrowful tides crawl up the shore
bearing no reflection on the silver waters

in the human heart
a pale disc hangs, thinning
she gnaws at her own edge
a god too proud to beg
i fed her once with wonder
my gift sank beneath her gaze
untouched by dawn or dream
